So this turned out to be a very eventful weekend and NOT in the way that we had planned. Friday night Gabriel was extremely clingy and unrestful during the night. He had had a slight fever so we gave him some Tylenol. Devon and I figured that he was just teething again (seems like we only get about a week break between teeth). Saturday brought more of the same from Gabe. We were supposed to be heading to Norwalk on Sunday for a baby shower so Devon was cooking chicken to make homemade chicken salad and I was keeping Gabriel out of trouble. Come Saturday night Gabe still hadn’t really eaten a lot and was still clingy. Devon went to pick him up out of his booster seat and she was holding him against her chest. All of a sudden his chest got ultra hot and his feet got really cold. He was staring straight ahead and was not responding to either her or myself. I picked him up from Devon and took him to the bathtub for a tepid bath while she called 911. In the tub he continued to be unresponsive and simply stare straight ahead. His limbs were all very rigid as well. I did my best to comfort him while Devon talked to the dispatcher. An ambulance and firetruck were on their way.
After a few minutes Gabriel started to follow us with his eyes again and he was moving his arms and legs. We met the EMT at the end of the drive and started describing what had happened. They told us that he most likely had had a febrile seizure. It’s a seizure due to fever, usually caused by a virus or bacterial infection that causes a sudden, large spike in temperature. Devon and Gabe rode in the ambulance down to Children’s Medical Center in Dayton and I followed in the car. Once at the hospital they took all of his vitals and measured his responses to stimuli. His temperature was above normal so he got a dose of Tylenol and we waited for the doctor. The doctor’s examine involved listening to Gabe’s breathing and his heart, looking in his ears and throat, a blood draw, and a range of motion test of his neck. Gabe’s breathing and heart rate were good, his ears looked clear of infection, his throat did not have fever burns, and his range of motion on his neck was fine (which indicated it was not Meningitis). The blood draw was to measure his white blood cell count. That came back normal so it meant that he did not have a bacterial infection and that he most likely was working through a virus. The doctor recommended that we not be around any groups of people for the next 24 to 48 hours while the risk of spread was high so that meant the baby shower was out.
The doctor talked to us about what febrile seizure was, what it meant for Gabriel as far as long-term health, and gave us a fact sheet to take with us. Health wise for Gabriel it doesn’t increase his risk of developing epilepsy and it doesn’t cause brain damage unless it goes on for long amounts of time (he said hours of duration). Some babies get these every time they have a fever and some never have it happen again. He said that most toddlers will grow out of them by the time they are 5. So after a long night in the hospital and Gabriel’s first ambulance ride we headed home.
Sunday we all just hung out at home and Devon called her shower guest to apologize for having to miss (she understood our reason!). So we were expecting a busy weekend of cooking and driving but ended up with a busy weekend using our local emergency medical system. It was scary to see Gabriel like that but good that everything turned out alright and that Devon and I were both home to support each other.
